What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of chips, cracks and stains, as well as spacing issues and discolouration. Small increments of composite resin, matched to your exact tooth shade are carefully layered and shaped, piece by piece.

Thanks to the unique properties of composite resin, the result bears a fantastically close resemblance to real tooth enamel.

What to expect from composite bonding

Once we have talked you through the other options available for restoring cosmetic imperfections with your teeth (this may include Invisalign, veneers or teeth whitening) we can proceed with composite bonding, should you and your dentist decide this is the most suitable treatment for your case. There may be some planning stages involved where we get scans of your teeth and mock up versions made in wax from the dental lab.

To start the treatment, the surface of your tooth is prepared and the composite resin is carefully applied to the tooth’s surface. Dentists are particularly fond of composite bonding because of the level of artistry it allows them to exhibit. The bonded composites used means your dentist here at Shawbirch Dental can accurately sculpt your tooth to be in keeping with the shape of neighbouring teeth.

A special light is then used to harden the composite in place and the tooth is polished.

Aftercare

A few aftercare tips to note include:

• Your bonded tooth can be looked after in the same way as your other teeth.
• Avoid biting foreign objects. Nail biting, pens and ice are common culprits for causing damage to a bonded tooth.
• Brush twice a day and use TePeTM brushes to clean in between your teeth.
• Drink water after each meal and avoid teeth-staining food and drink to make sure your bonded tooth lasts for as many years as possible.
• See the hygienist every 6 months to keep the gums healthy, remove any plaque build-up and keep staining at bay.
