Experiencing a toothache can be debilitating and cause loss of sleep, difficulty eating, time off work and result in disruption to your daily routine and happiness.

We are here to help you, should you need an emergency appointment and we will try our best to see you. Our reception team will ask some questions to establish the severity of the problem.

What is a dental emergency?

There are a few situations that are best seen as soon as possible.

These include:

• Knocked-out tooth – make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible. The quicker you are seen, the better chance the tooth has of surviving.
• Facial swelling – if you notice swelling across an area of the face, please give us a call so we can address it before it gets any bigger.
• Uncontrolled bleeding after a tooth extraction – if you cannot control the bleeding by biting on the gauze after you have had a tooth extracted, please call us for advice as we may need to see you again.
• Severe pain keeping you awake all night, constant throbbing, abscess or inability to open the mouth.

How much is an emergency appointment?

Denplan = FREE

Emergency appointments are free to Denplan members.

NHS = £23.80

If you are registered as an NHS patient and are under 18 or exempt from paying for treatment then an NHS emergency appointment is free.

Private = £63.00

Pay as you go private patients who have already been seen at the practice.

New patients = £86.00

If you have not been to see us for a dental examination in the past 3 years, then an emergency appointment is £86.00, this includes an x-ray but does not include the cost of the treatment.

Out of hours emergency care

The practice is part of a private dental emergency out of hours scheme which can be contacted on 01922 479 299. Please note if you are not registered on Denplan then there will be a private fee for this.

NHS patients can call 111 or opt to pay privately on the above emergency scheme.

What to do if your tooth is knocked out

If your adult tooth is knocked out, carefully hold the tooth by the crown (the part that is seen in the mouth), rinse the root underwater if it is dirty – but do not scrub it. Carefully place it back in the socket and make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible.

If the tooth was already wobbly due to gum disease, then the tooth will not attach back in the socket and you may have to consider options to replace the missing tooth.
